How to Clean a Dirty Microwave in 8 Simple Steps from our Housekeepers

Step 1: Remove the glass plate.

The first thing you need to do is remove the microwave the glass plate, and the plastic ring underneath. Place them in a sink full of hot soapy water. Let it soak while you are cleaning the inside and outside of the microwave.

Step 2: Wipe down the inside of the microwave

Wipe down the inside of the microwave with a paper towel to remove any food particles. Don’t worry about scrubbing the microwave at this point. Just make sure to remove any loose debris from the inside of the microwave.
Step 3: Use steam to break up the stuck-on food

The hardest part of cleaning a microwave is removing all the stuck-on and burned-on food from the inside of the microwave. If food splatters and stains have been sitting inside of the microwave for a long time, they can be really stubborn and hard to scrub off. This is where steam really helps.
Fill up a microwave-safe bowl with lemon juice and water. Then place it in the microwave. Using full power, microwave the lemon water for around 5 minutes. As the water gets hot, steam will form inside the microwave. The lemon and steam will help to break down any stains and stuck-on food. Not only that, but it will make your kitchen smell terrific.

Leave the microwave door closed for about 5 or 10 minutes after it’s finished running. This will give the steam time to do some of the dirty work. Remove the lemon water carefully. Make sure you are using oven mitts because the water may still be very hot.

Then take a scrub brush or sponge and scrub the inside of the microwave. This should make cleaning the inside of your microwave easy.

Step 4: Wipe down with vinegar

Vinegar is a disinfectant and it’s ideal for cleaning a microwave. It may not smell terrific, but it will help to kill any bacteria living inside your microwave. Use a spray bottle with a solution of half water and half vinegar to spray down the inside of your microwave. Wipe the inside of the microwave again with a damp cloth or sponge. This should get rid of any remaining debris while disinfecting the microwave. Dry the inside of the microwave with a paper towel.

Step 5: Unplug the microwave

Once the inside of the microwave is clean, unplug your microwave to clean the outside and underneath the microwave. Pull the microwave away from the wall and clean underneath it. If your microwave is built-in to your cabinets, it’s still a good idea to unplug it first.

Step 6: Clean the outside of the microwave

Use vinegar and water to clean the outside of the microwave. This will ensure that your entire microwave is disinfected. Wipe down the vents, the sides of the microwave, and underneath the microwave. You may need to use a scrub brush if there are stubborn stains. Be sure that all the high touch areas, like the microwave door handle and power buttons, are wiped down and disinfected.

Step 7: Clean the glass window

Once you are done, spray some glass cleaner on the inside and outside glass window on the door of your microwave. The last thing you want to see are streaks on your microwave. Wipe both sides with a dry paper towel until you see clearly through the window and all the streaks are removed.

Step 8: Clean the glass plate

The glass plate for your turntable should be easy to clean now. Wash it in the sink, rinse it, and dry it with a paper towel. Wash and dry the plastic ring that holds it in place. Then place them both back in the microwave. Use a paper towel to wipe the entire microwave down once more. Once you are sure that it is completely dry, plug it back in and push it back in place.
